A new nationwide survey of people living with IBM in Japan paints a detailed picture of daily burdens and unmet needs. Published October 26, 2026 in Muscle & Nerve, the study surveyed members of a Japanese IBM patient association to understand symptoms, healthcare use, and what patients want from the system.

What the Researchers Did

The team led by Dr. Satoshi Yamashita conducted a nationwide questionnaire from April to September 2025 among members of a Japanese IBM patient association. Of 59 responses, 58 were included in the analysis. The survey covered demographics, disease characteristics, healthcare and social service use, satisfaction with care, employment, information needs, and views on healthcare policy.

Key Findings

The cohort was mostly men (male-to-female ratio 2:1), with mean age at onset 61.8 years and mean disease duration 10.0 years. Nearly everyone reported lower limb weakness (98%) and finger muscle weakness (95%), while 64% reported dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).

Many patients were using disability support: 74% had disability certification and 69% were using long-term care insurance. Satisfaction with hospital services was generally high, but satisfaction with consultation services was only moderate.

Most strikingly, 96% of patients supported establishing specialized information centers for IBM — a strong signal that patients want more accessible, IBM-specific information and better care coordination.

What This Means for IBM Patients

The findings mirror what many in the IBM community already know: weakness affects daily tasks, swallowing can become an issue, and navigating benefits and long-term care is a major part of life with IBM. The high demand for specialized information centers highlights a gap that patient organizations and advocacy groups are well-positioned to help fill.

For clinicians and policymakers, the message is clear — people with IBM need not just medical management, but coordinated support services and reliable, accessible information tailored to this rare disease.
